http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAmZ9O-wocY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wWdF_kZhjA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zY814pilzlo

Dear Sir,
The song is virtually before our eyes when I read your words! Your examples on this raaga citing our master's earlier songs are timely and make us understand the raaga better.
Thanks

Many thanks to Parthavi Sir and Sai Sir.

Actually the western chorus will seamlessly shift to a classical one before the pallavi and thats beautiful arrangement by the Master !

The ending note of western will be replaced by the carnatic note Shocked Very Happy

I found it very tough to write down the notations as most of the words have multiple joint swaras and they slide ....Imagining how MSV would have played the notes on his pet Harmonium while doing the composing and the assistant having a very challenging job to take notes .....

Yes Sir... for this itself we should do Vanakkam to MSV the greatest.

Ramki or Vaidy or anyone close to the Master, pls check with him about this song...

Dear Balaji,

Since you have touched upon another Aabhogi song 'naanandri yaar varuvar?' I would like to have your analysis of the second line 'Enillai?' I have no knowledge of raagaas but to me it always appeared that this 'enillai?' was something different. it appears to be an unexpected and surprising detour from the first line. Does MSV go on a different route in this line and then comes and joins the mainstream note soon afterwards? Ignore this if my doubt is stupid but explain it if there is any significance.

Sure Sir. I will try it on instrumental and confirm by tomorrow. And, pls feel free to ask queries. MSV , I realise , is penchant for sudden deviation from the raga to bring more melody .

I will confirm on En illai

Nice observation SRS . Thanks Smile ...Yes, the western chorus will end with a note which PS will pick it and convert into an alapanai !! Great work...its like an answer to western music the classical way ! I will work on Ammanai also soon.

Parthavi Sir,

Your query on En illai

Actually the , swaram goes like this :

From Ma....it swings to Da.....and then a lightening speed oscillation from Sa ( upper note ) to Ma and then Da !!

So, they are very much Abogi swaras only .

I also tried playing the entire song . It appears, the duo were careful in arranging the notes then ( 1958 ) and since T.R.M. is going to sing, they probably didnt want to deviate from the main raga ...... So, one can say , this song is 100 % Abogi.

Also, another reason why you found it a bit different could be that the Masters intentionally made the pallavi at a low pitch and so when the femal version yen illai comes, it goes to the higher notes and you see a visible change here .

However, the song is not an easy one for any singing competition as the ending part of charanam goes even beyond the upper Ma ....thats incredible work by the Masters and must have been specially crafted for T.R.Mahalingam whose penchant was mainly high note singing ......

Another titbit to Naan andri yaar. It seems, this song was composed for Mahadevi , but the Mannan Makkal Thilagam preferred some other tune and hence this was used for Malayittaa mangai... the song which replaced this was ....Kann moodum velayilum kalai indha kalaiye , a great melody Very Happy

Dear Balaji,
A great writing on the birth day of the music man. If you are going to write like this then we shall celebrate his birth day every week!

I agree with you on all the points except for one. That the song Naan andri and Thanga Radham have pure Abogi swaras, Vanakkam song has some variations from pure abogi. That it goes to Panchaamam and Nishadham in the Preludes and interludes in the Trumpet piece it get back to abogi swaras when the flute comes.

But still in the charanam I do not know for what reason he touches the swara kaisagi Nishadam that ni1 not supposed to be in abogi. This you can see very clearly when the line comes 'anbu selvangal' and it is only in the particular line in both the charanam.

Otherwise it is overall in 'Abogi' swaras and the basic shruthi is madhyama
shuthi. That is if you are playing in C scale normally you shall keep 'C' major (C-E-G OR sa-ga2-pa) for the panchama shruthi and in this case it is F major (F-A-C or sa-ma1-da).

Ramki knows one interesting incident when MSV discussed about the Raga of this song. Let him write.

Dear Sir,
I have heard that the song 'Ammaanai' is based on Dharmavathi, but going by the feel I feel it is more like Madhuvanti. This is mainly due to the feelings and emotions that Madhuvanti evokes that I felt that it could be closer to Madhuvanti. I do not know how to decipher or differentiate the two due to lack of knowledge in classical music. May be our stalwarts like Murali Sir or Balaji sir would be in a position to educate.
Thanks,
Sai Saravanan
