I think this is the first movie showing Bharathi. B.R.Pantulu has done a very good study on the behavioural attributes and traits of Mahakavi…. introduces the character immediately after the ' Boycott foreign goods ' movement ends….S.V.Subbaiah makes an emotional introduction through singing the famous song ' Endru Thaniyum indha sudhandhira dhagam ' . BRP aptly uses arguably the best and most ideal song amongst the many penned by Mahakavi !...What a terrific portrayal of SVS !! Until in 2000 when Bharathi movie was made wherein Shayaji Shinde , a Maratha even without understanding the meanings gave an outstanding performance….
SVS still is being remembered by most of the old timers as the very best imaging of Subramania Bharathi….the way he walks, talks, speaks with birds, cajoles his wife Chellamma , the nonchalance shown to his houseowner, the supreme confidence and majestic representation of witness before the Court when VOC is cross examined , the celebratory and proud gesture when VOC comes with the ship, the vision plan for a bright Bharatham, the tearful face when he hears that VOC is being tortured in prison, the emotional singing before his favourite Goddess Shakthi…..
With great difficutly, Chellamma borrows some rice from her neighbour only to see her husband spraying to the sparrows and gleefully chatting with them as they eat !!! even while the milk man, the house owner, the provision supplier all queue up for their dues, a nonchalant Bharathi only teases them unmindful of his situation ! On seeing all these creditors arguing, he goes to pooja room and argues with Shakthi …' Amma , if your favourite son is going to plead for his day to day life, is this the way, you are going to treat your child ? ' …only SVS can do such wonderful depiction ……
Jumping with joy on seeing the large vessel with VOC on top cheerfully acknowledging the crowd, the character runs around shouting ' Engal Bharatha desam endru tholkottuvom '…
The forceful manner he lipsynchs for those powerful lyrics .........
May be, SVS believed himself to be Bharathi and lived like the personality himself
SVS's depiction came in 1961…..for 40 years until 2000, the sole image of SVS only was the sole reference point for Bharathi
KOT is also being remembered today for SVS ...when someone thinks of SVS, the image of Bharathi only will come first
Many have performed the character , including Nadigar Thilagam himself ( Kai kodutha Deivam ) but the glorious characterisation of SVS as an eccentric, emotional, aggressive , upright Bharathi will be the ultimate…….A lasting impression
