Dear Friends,
Our efforts of discussing Kannadasan, Viswanathan is far from complete. However, as we recall their songs, sometimes we encounter a tricky situation. What is that? Whenever we view video clippings of old movies, in a stanza or two we are unable 'murmur' the song; this is because we are more more familiar with the 'Record' version than with the 'movie' version. Obviously it is a shift or drift from the original[record version from the listeners; point of view].

It took sometime for me to recognize the reasons behind those shifts between versions. The then censors were very rigid not to permit expressions that may trigger imagination/ fantasy among viewers and such lyric phrases were mercilessly edited out. If such cuts were enforced, stretches of frames in songs would be blank.

To overcome the shortening of a song, producers resorted to 'phrase replacements' and had them incorporated in the movie before final certification.

It should have been a daunting task as, under the new dispensation, Lyricist has to employ more permissible words to fit into the tune and ALSO THE MODE AND MOOD OF SINGING.

Equally, it was a hefty demand on MDs to aptly insert the correction and get it on the final version as then there were no facilities to erase and paste. Great people have done these without a hitch.
Classic indeed.

We will look into some such cases soon.
Warm regards K.Raman Madurai
