Dear Friends,
I hereby DEDICATE this 900 th posting of mine to the legendary associate of MSV -Shri.MS Raju popular as Mandolin Raju. But this gentleman was a pillar of strength to MSV's orchestra till he passed away on 06-04-2007 -exactly 4 months from the inception of our website.
Though called Mandolin Raju, his repertoire was far wide and deep as to be a trusted lieutenant of MSV. His contribution can never be ignored if we consider the dimensions of those.
Besides Mandolin he could handle Veena, Whistling, Santoor, Youghling and ''konnakkOl''- an art that is not given to the ordinary.
As we all know it was MSV who carved a niche for Mandolin , Guitar , Bongo and Drums in TFM by 1960s. Certainly the elegant playing and placing of those instruments through a song was exemplary to say the least. Obviously the expertise of players like Raju made all the difference between compositions of MSV and those from some others in the same period. Unlike now, in those days orchestra troupes were with the MDs and MSV was the one who had carefully developed a band of his experts.
As for Raju, these references may be useful :
Whistling :
'vandha nAL mudhal'
'NeerOdum vaigaiyilE' , 'kELvi pirandhadhu andru' , 'nenjaiththai aLLi konjam', 'nenjaththilE nee nEtru vandhai', 'nenjirukkum engaLukku','kodukka kodukka inbam pirakkumE'[ MSV -PS duet] 'endhan paruvaththin kELvikku' and many other songs.
Santoor
an elegant exposition of it in 'aaru manamE aaru'
'konnakkOl'
'neeyE unakku endrum nigarAnavan' [for MR Radha]
youghling
'malendra mugam ondru' 'allippandhal kAlgaL eduththu'
What is amazing is, the way he handled his voice and whistling to exactly honour the scale to which a plan was decided by MSV. His whistling has been so very perfect that romance lay strewn all over. What a gift to TFM?
I feel happy being able recall such greats through our forum.
Warm regards K.Raman Madurai _________________ Prof. K. Raman
