Dear Friends,
"1000 il oruvan" was a familiar theme to earlier TF industry , projecting pirates as the central characters. B.R Pantulu worked on that issue availing of contemporary artistes and visual presentation of the marine ambience in colour.
Obviously it was a relief for the audience who were taken a little deeper into sea waters unlike the shore-centered plot in "Padagotti" of GN Velumani. That way BR P opened up another scope for visuals though only the dominant colour was of the sky and sea. Yet he managed the 'all important pep' through costumes and youth of the artistes by some careful designing of dress for all of them.
It certainly should have been a tight rope walking for the movie crew to come out with novel projections of an age-old theme. The greater complexity was to use dialogue of earlier versions to suggest the issues of Piracy, Slavery and harsh uncertain prospects of life over the sea. So to say it was all at sea if we recall the handling of the theme.

The then grapevine was - MSV was asked to make the best of the occasion even if it meant opting for special instruments and strategies befitting the story line. That was more than enough for MSV to reveal THAT HE WAS HIMSELF AN 1000il ORUVAN.
Warm regards Prof. K.R Madurai.

Dear Prof,
A land mark movie for MSV. The music had Middle Eastern touch right though
the movie. I remember the back round scores for the initial stages up to the period when MGR was transported in a ship to a far away place as a slave the music would be different. Once the character Jayalalitha was introduced with a song with a bang the Middle Eastern touch takes over right through the movie as the story goes like that.

As usual MSV came out with a stunning performance in which we could find it difficult the rate the songs in the order of popularity.

However the song 'Paruvam enadhu paadal' has some very unique features never tried before or after.

That was using the chorus singers to give the chords arpeggio under the layer of P suseela's vocal humming melody. As the melody changes from one chords progression to the other the chorus singes changes the arpeggio of the changed chords. The chords selected aptly resembles the Middle Eastern touch.

One of the many great innovations of MSV.
